Buddhist monk granted exclusive licence on invention

Superior Buddhist Monk Thich Hue Dang (or Nguyen Van Sau) at Thanh Quang Pagoda is the only Buddhist monk in Vietnam who has been granted the exclusive licence on invention by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Thanh Quang Pagoda is located by the bank of the Tuyen Lam Lake. It is also the Head Quarters of the Thanh Quang Orchid Export Company Limited. Thich Hue Dang is very famous for planting orchids and in 2012, he was granted an exclusive licence on invention by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam for his Ngoc Linh Ginseng planting project.

About ten years ago when I first met the monk, he gave me two name cards, one for the Thanh Quang Pagoda and the other for the Thanh Quang Company.

Planting orchids to make Da Lat more beautiful

Thich Hue Dang has been a monk for more than 50 years. He moved to Da Lat in 1985 where he started planting orchids. In the early days, the monk and his disciples brought orchids to Ho Chi Minh City for exhibitions and for sale. When I asked him a question about people’s greed, anger and ignorance, he said that people themselves have the right to choose either happy or unhappy life. It means that people can choose either being greedy-angry-ignorant or being themselves to be pleased.

“Religion should not be separated from the daily life,” he said, adding that “if we practise our own religion without helping people, it means we have done nothing good. Buddhism will not exist without people”

With his view about religion and life, he has done gardening, written books and practised his religion for tens of years. He also thinks that planting orchids will help honour Da Lat’s beauty. It is very important that people earn and spend money with their good heart.

Monk Thich Hue Dang now has a dreaming number of 100,000 of orchid pots in his garden, many of them are imported from Australia and the Neitherland. The monk has also successfully carried out a research project on the protection of forest and environment in general.

Study on Ngoc Linh Ginseng

It is no longer a surprise that in Thanh Quang Pagoda there is a research centre with a number of scientists working as researchers and staff. The centre has successfully completed a project on planting Ngoc Linh Ginseng and from there, hundreds of thousands of Ngoc Linh Ginseng plants have been exported to all over the world, and even to Kon Tum, which is known as home for Ngoc Linh Ginseng.

He told me the story of his first trip to Ngoc Linh Mountain to look for Ngoc Linh Ginseng in 2008, saying that at that time, he and his disciples were determined to bring the plant to Da Lat to ensure the supply of medical materials.

“I have been to even the Republic of Korea to learn about how to plant ginseng and up to now, hundreds of thousands of ginseng plants have been produced in my laboratory”, he said.

“I really want more and more people to own Ngoc Linh Ginseng products. My dream can only come true when the plant becomes popular,” he said.

In the history of Vietnamese Buddhism, Thich Hue Quang is the first monk to become a scientist and is granted an exclusive licence.

In Da Lat, not all people are doing hi-tech agriculture for economic development only. Thich Hue Dang, together with Nghiem Van Minh and Nguyen Quoc Minh, are working for economic development and other reasons.
