VUSTA's President attends the World Conference on Science Literacy 2019

On October 16 and 17, 2019, President of Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) Dang Vu Minh attended the 2nd World Conference on Science Literacy organized by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in Beijing.

More than six hundred guests took part in the conference, including representatives of international and national science organizations, scientists, educators and entrepreneurs from more than 30 countries worldwide.


The two-day event consisted of various activities, including 2 plenary sessions, 3 parallel talks, 2 roundtable discussion sessions and a number of sidelines such as field visit to Chinese Science Museum.

Under the theme of "Science Literacy for Sustainable Development" the conference was designed to promote the sound interactions between science and society and advocate the experience and resource sharing between nations in science education, communication and popularization, help deliver the United Nation's 2030 sustainable development goals and advance the building of a community of shared future for humanity. At its plenary session, after the welcome session of the President of CAST and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative, representatives of various organizations such as the International Science Council, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, UNESCO, the major scientists from universities from Israel, Germany, England, Japan, etc. who are experts and scholars made presentations on the importance of promoting the science literacy to achieve SDGs.


VUSTA takes part in the roundtable discussion at the Conference

At two round-table discussion sessions, representatives of 19 science and technology organizations discussed the CAST's initiative on establishing an International Organization for Science Literacy, detailed name, vision, mission as well as drafting the Charter of the organization. Participants made a consensus on forming a working group to continue collecting inputs from organizations then finalizing relevant documents for the establishment of a new organization. The World Organization of Scientific Literacy (WOSL) is expected to be formally established next year.

VUSTA committed to proactively and responsibly participate in the Conference as well as contribute effectively on the establishment of the WOSL, promote cooperation and exchange of science and technology with other countries in order to achieve SDGs.
