Dr. Sc. Nghiem Vu Khai delivered his opening remarks

In the morning of 8th August, 2018, the Vietnam Society for Biology (the Association) solemnly held the 6th National Congress (2018-2023 term). Attending the Congress were over 200 delegates representing 4500 members from 26 member units nationwide. Dr.Sc Nghiem Vu Khai, Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), member of the XIV National Assembly attended and delivered a speech at the Congress.

The Association currently has 17 specialized professional associations at central, 03 at local and 6 specialized units, gathers about 4500 members. The Association gained success in organizational development, implemented diversified activities and achieved remarkable results in the last tenure.


The mobilization of intellectuals and organizational development missions have been considered as key tasks and widely deployed to each member association. The Vietnam Association of Zoos consolidated its organization into 7 sub associations, the Vietnam Genetics Association organized activities under diversified forms in order to create linkage between its members…

In the field of social consultancy and evaluation has been paid attention and gained outstanding achievements, such as the Association of Vietnam Plant Disease (VPD) attracted many scientists in 12 Mekong Delta provinces to provide opinions and ideas on "How to prevent disease of dwarf and abaxially curled leaf in rice", VPD also gave recommendations for Son Tra peninsula project (Da Nang) in terms of protection of the ecosystem paying special attention to the Pygathrix nemaeus fauna living in this area. The Association also mobilized scientists to assess the pollution impact of the Formosa plant in Ha Tinh (joining with the delegations of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), assess the causes of fish kills problem in the West lake (Hanoi), contribute opinions to the project of "Protection of the biodiversity of Hoan Kiem Lake in the process of dredging".

With regard to the field of communication and dissemination knowledge and information, the Association organized seminars and symposiums on various topics. This activity has been implemented in almost member associations and attracted the attention of the society, such as: dissemination knowledge of evidence-based science and practice of genetically modified plants and foods on The voice of Vietnam; active participation in workshops and seminars organized by Ministry of Education and Training on education reform in the genetics subject.

In addition, the Association and its members also focused on scientific research, implemented a number of projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels of which achieved good results, such as "Biodiversity conservation in lakes in Hanoi"; "Climate change adaptation for biodiversity in the Mekong Delta, Hoa Binh province"; "Amending the subject of ecology in secondary and high schools"…

Thanks to above activities, the staffs and members of the Association have been honored and rewarded in Vietnam and the world.

In order to promote activities effectively, the Association has defined key tasks including gathering and mobilizing intellectuals, developing number of member associations and organizational consolidation in order to form the General Association of Biological Sciences of Vietnam; strengthening the training of basic knowledge on biology, genetics, mycology...; organizing and participating in social consultancy and evaluation activities; building communication channels for the Association's activities; expanding of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

Speaking at the Congress, Dr. Sc. Nghiem Vu Khai congratulated and highly appreciated the achievements of the Association and its members in the past term, he also emphasized the importance of biotechnology as a priority in the scientific and technological development strategy of the Party and the State. Contributing to the development of biology as well as biotechnology in the past years, the scientists and experts of the Association have made great efforts that enhanced the development of the National science as well as the socio - economic development of the country in the fields of agriculture and rural development, health care and environment protection…

Dr. Nghiem Vu also highly appreciated the direction and strategy of the Association in the coming time which focused on reforming the mobilization of the intellectual in order to adapt to current status; on closely follow the key projects of all areas of the socio - economic development of the country such as agriculture, people's health care, environmental protection and improvement of people's life quality to actively propose projects for the Association and/or directly participate in those primary programs; on strengthening social consultancy and evaluation activities in all member associations as well as the Association.

The Congress elected the Executive Committee for the term of 2018-2023 including 48 members, Prof. Dr. Le Tran Binh was elected as President of the Association. On this occasion, in recognition of the contributions of member associations, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations awarded certificates of merit to the four member associations for their outstanding achievements.
