A solemn remembrance ceremony of Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang was held on March 6 at Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA).

Attending the ceremony were Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nga, Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang’s wife and his family members, representatives of VUSTA, Vietnam Seed Association, Vietnam Biological Sciences Association, Center for Research on Conservation and Promotion of Vietnamese Culture, Field Crops Research Institute (FCRI) and many friends and colleagues of Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang.

At opening speech of the ceremony, Prof. Acad. Dang Vu Minh – President of VUSTA shared that Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang, being a great scientist and an internationally-recognized Academician, he had pursued a very simple life. He was generous with life but was very disciplined at work. Moreover, He is talented in mobilizing and attracting scientists and intellectuals to work for the development of the country.


Madam Nguyen Thi Hong Nga shared a lot of memories and said that "scientific research is a hard challenging work but his passion for it has never ever been wired off. I am always supportive and proud of him"

Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang came from a well-known family of Vietnam art and literature area. He is son of Vu Ngoc Phan (1902 – 1987), a famous literature researcher who was awarded Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art in 1996), and Poet Hang Phuong (1908 - 1983). He was born in 1938 in Hanoi. Like many children of famous families, Vu Tuyen Hoang received both domestic and overseas education.

Prof. Acad. Hoang graduated from Hoa Nam University (China) since youth, then he taught at Hanoi Agricultural University No. 1. Latter on, he was sent to Russia to complete his PhD. dissertation (1973) and scientific doctoral dissertation (1978) of biology.

Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang spent almost his life for biology, e.g. rice, vegetables and root vegetables. Among his remarkable scientific achievements, made new rice seeds which is appropriate to cultivation seasons and with high protein content of about 11% as well as made new sweet potato, new vegetables, new apple varieties, etc.

In his scientific life, Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang has left more than 50 national-accredited scientific works, such as planting potatoes by seeds, selecting and creating new rice varieties, drought resistant rice, developing of intensive farming technique, directly planting rice by seeds…In the year of 2000, he was honorably awarded Ho Chi Minh Prize for science and technology. When he passed away, he was not able to finish an important project that he had initiated, that was a national independent research project on selecting and creating high quality rice varieties for domestic consumption and export.

Prof. Vu Tuyen Hoang has held different important positions such as Director of Field Crops Research Institute (FCRI), Deputy Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development cum Director of Institute of Agricultural Genetics, Member of Central Committee, President of VUSTA and President of Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association, etc.

The life of Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang has been dedicated to farmers. In addition to agricultural scientific works, he also participated in political and social activities to contribute to development of the country. Along with activities of scientific and technological creation, Prof. Acad. Vu Tuyen Hoang is also known as a talented artist with art-literary works. He has 20 poetry collections with the other poets, and one publication of his own one, about 400 short proses published in the New World Journal from 1996 to 2004, which were compiled in the “Tan Man Duong Dai” publication (published in 2003). His painted portraits, landscapes were published in several magazines and some art exhibitions as well.
