The Man of culture and virtue

The prevailing side of Ho Chi Minh over many other celebrities consists in the fact that all his life is a great, complete set of books about virtue. The strength of Ho Chi Minh’s culture and virtue had spread, infiltrated for becoming a perpetual cultural value in generations of Vietnamese people. Since long, Ho Chi Minh had won the heart and mind of Vietnamese people to glorify Him as a supreme leader, a national hero, as beloved Uncle Ho, mostly and primarily by His virtue.

As per President Ho Chi Minh, the virtue is the root, the quintessence of a revolutionary. He admitted: “Just like a river needing the source to get water; without source, the river runs dry. And a tree needing the root, without root, the tree shall wither. The revolutionary must be imbued with virtue; without virtue; he could not lead people, despite his talent and qualifications. For liberating the nation, the mankind, is a garguantan job, but without virtue, without spiritual fundament and being innately corrupted, degenerated, what this type of “so-called revolutionary” could do?”.

Regarding the revolutionary, President Ho Chi Minh conceived that: “To engage oneself into revolution for changing the old society towards the new one is a very glorious cause but it is also an extremely painful task, a very complicated, difficult struggle. Only endowed with a great strength, we could carry a heavy burden and go a long way. The revolutionary must equip himself with a revolutionary virtue as a basis for fulfilling his glorious revolutionary task.

In the end of his days on 1969, He still wrote the article: “Heightening the revolutionary virtue, driving away the individualism” right on the occasion of commemorating the establishment of the Party, for educating cadres and Party members. And in his Testament, He wrote: “Each Party member and cadre must be truly impregnated with the revolutionary virtue, with the spirit of diligence, thrift, integrity, righteousness, utmost impartiality and disinterest. We have to keep our Party being cleanest, to deserve the role of a leader, a faithful servant of the people...”

Ho Chi Minh examined closely the virtue issue versus all subjects, mostly citizens’ virtue, and particularly emphasised the virtue of cadres, Party members. Probably, in Vietnam, Uncle Ho was the first ever leader to touch upon the citizens’ virtue in a new regime when linking it with the obligation of tax paying “at the fixed amount and on the right date”.

The Ho Chi Minh’s virtue culture is manifested specifically by the unity between thought and action, i.e. He combined the words and the activities, in many instances, to do more than to say. In his mode of thinking “to learn” must connect with “to act”, theory must combine with practice, just like pairs of a whole, never to be divided, taken apart. Right from the first lessons for training, educating the revolutionary cadres, in the introduction, He had enunciated: “Essential qualities of a revolutionary” comprise 23 articles, of which the article “What we say, we have to implement it”. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh was a philosopher in action, manifesting the purity / transparency in culture. This is impregnated in human relations, in cultural behaviour.

President Ho Chi Minh had got an excellent cultural behaviour when all his life was a perfect mirror in a natural manner for all people could be reflected in it. Some people admitted that it is very hard to learn and follow the Ho Chi Minh’s example / model of virtue. Today, when circumstances had been changed a lot, whether or not the Ho Chi Minh’s mirror is still effective. For example, the young people, the 8X, 9X generations and forthcoming generations are posing questions such as: “Whether or not they have to wear sandals fashioned from truck tyres like Uncle Ho, they have to economise in frugal eating, wearing and not copiously eating, nicely wearing, they have to persist in “riches and wealths could not seduce” etc...? Difficult or easy matters all depend on ourself. Learning is not imitating. Learning from Ho Chi Minh examples consists in searching for essential nature of the issues to apply in concordance with the life’s circumstances.

Setting a vivid example for others to follow, is a behaviour in life of Uncle Ho. There were many counter cultural, false virtuous deeds consisting in much words, few actions, or good speech, bad activity, even speaking in one way, doing in another mode. President Ho Chi Minh said that in the Orient and in Vietnam, a vivid example is more valuable than hundreds of null and void speeches. Cadres, Party members, the competent persons and especially, key positioned cadres setting a bright mirror shall create a healthy cultural life for the society; on the contrary, the consequences shall be immeasurably calamitous.

Building an environment of revolutionary virtue

The virtue environment is now polluted in some fields, some domains. The new mechanism had given rise to dynamicity of society in various fields, but not yet firmly controlled the evil, the wicked events. Social evils are still growing. Money with demoniac strength had spoiled many cadres, Party members, and destroyed the human relations’ standards of behaviour. Building a cultural virtue in such an environment becomes much more difficult. The responsibility in making clean the cultural virtue is not an individual’s one, but of everybody, of the whole political system, of each family. Firstly, in the building of a revolutionary virtue’s environment, the following issues have to be particularly considered:

- To live, to work according to the Constitution and the law;

- To respect and to promote beautiful traditions, good morals and good customs;

- To combine more closely the family, the school and the society in the building of a new cultural virtue environment;

- To comprehensively deal with political, economic, cultural, social issues for enhancing a fast, sustainable development of our country.

Despite any measures to be taken, the conscious awareness of each individual is most important. The very consciousness and action of each person are prerequisite conditions for creating a fine virtue environment. We can not wait for a good environment and then to build the revolutionary virtue but we have to conceive it as a process of combining both building and fighting without passivity. And the development indices of every nation must give due consideration to the cultural-ethical environment in which each individual, each community of the nation... has got opportunities and conditions for free development, for stretching out the truth, the good deed, the beauty, and not merely the economic growth indice.
