August 1945 Revolution – A precious lesson of great national unity

66 years ago, within the last two weeks of August 1945, all Vietnamese people under the leadership of the Indochinese Communist Party, Viet Minh Front and leader Ho Chi Minh agree to carry out an uprising to resolutely seize power in order to decide the destiny of the nation. Annam and its people became independent nation - Vietnam from slavery and had the right of self-determination; Vietnamese is the owner of a democratic and free regime.

Victory of the Revolution in August 1945 not only opened a new era for Vietnam, but also helped Vietnam seize power. It took place in the shortest period of time, with the smallest losses, but it is largest and most absolute achievement in the history of mankind without precedent, even in the future.

To gain that tremendous victory, it is first necessary to take into account the great contributions of all Vietnamese, but Ho Chi Minh’s role is undeniable. President Ho Chi Minh tramped about abroad through thick and thin, to learn the experience of Vietnam’s and the word’s revolutions, in search for the uniquely right revolutionary path for Vietnam, and founded the Vietnamese Communist Party in 1930;

Not only he was the founder of the United National Front, but he also directly trained the Communist Party of Vietnam which led the nation through the Front to carry out two general rehearsal 1930-1931 and 1936-1939 with a view to overcome leftist trend in the Party and the international communist movement at that time; President Ho Chi Minh also directly led the rehearsal to seize power in Cao-Bac-Lang (1943-1944) with a brilliant prediction "the Allies win, fascists lose, Vietnam certainly gains independence"[1]. He firmly grasped at the opportunity and when the time was ripe and he "snatched" the opportunity, together with all Vietnamese, led the revolution to the great victory - "August 1945 Revolution."

The August 1945 Revolution creates valuable revolutionary experience about the unity of the entire nation. Solidarity is a precious tradition in our thousands-of-years history of the building and protecting the nation. Solidarity has also become a typical value in the current political culture of Vietnam.

Yet, it is not obvious, although it has become a law of historical development of Vietnam. The profound cause of major obstacles to the strength of our unity is that Vietnam is a multi-ethnic nation with many cross-border ethnic groups, so it always contains the risk of discrimination and separation. Vietnam’s cultural identity is of diversity, multi-faith, multi-religion, therefore, there will be differences in culture, faith, and religion among ethnic groups and regions, so it is very complex to build solidarity; Differences in race, religion and culture combine with the contradictions among social classes, various groups that make up conflicts, even prolonged civil wars in particular historical circumstances; from the mid-nineteenth century, the country was invaded by the French, with the policy of ’using Vietnamese to rule Vietnamese’, the national solidarity seriously weakened; even, from mid-1929 to early 1930, in Vietnam appeared three communist parties who actively campaigned workers and peasants to unite with each other, but they are mutual offensive. The discord obstructed the development of the patriotic movement and Vietnamese revolution.

The reality showed that to achieve national unity and reunification is not a simple task. However, from the mythology Thánh Gióng to Hai Ba Trung, Ba Trieu, Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Trai ... shaped Vietnam’s law on development: only when the great national unity is firmly established, could internal resources be promoted; the country became prosperous and peaceful; and people feel peaceful and happy. To sum up the historical experience, from 1942, in "The history of our country", President Ho Chi Minh taught that, "We have to know our history. It teaches us lesson that only when we unite, our independence is consolidated; otherwise, our independence will be in danger"[2].

From early time, leaders of the patriotic movements in Vietnam soon realized the law to liberate themselves from the domination of French colonialism. Therefore, the patriotic leaders of Vietnam kept calling "patriotism" and "solidarity" of all walks of life and of the entire nation. The calling for "solidarity" of Phan Boi Chau and patriotic leaders helped to awaken the national consciousness and patriotism of the many Vietnamese layers from the early twentieth century. However, due to the lack of theoretical foundations, means and specific measures, great national unity collapsed. This is one of the most fundamental causes leading to the failure of all the patriotic movements in Vietnam from the mid-late IX century to the period before the establishment day of the Vietnam Communist Party.

After years tramping about through thick and thin in search of a way to save the country, Nguyen Ai Quoc came to Marxism-Leninism, the most advanced revolutionary theory of the time. In 1924, he returned Guangzhou (China) from the Soviet Union to establish the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth Association and gathered young people - patriotic intellectual elites, opened many training courses to train them as a generation of talented officials, preparing for the great cause of founding party - Saving the country. Right from the first lesson, he pointed out that, "Revolution is the cause of the entire nation, not just a few people"[3]. "Annam’s missions must be associated with French revolution... Workers and peasants are the major forces of revolution"[4]; "Firstly, the party is a must to campaign and organize people inside the country and contact with oppressed nations and proletariat anywhere" [5]. "Annam’s revolution is also a part of the world’. Those who carry out revolution in the world are comrades of Annam people "[6].

When Nguyen Ai Quoc unified communist organizations to found the Communist Party of Vietnam on February 03rd, 1930, the first of "five major points" given as guidelines to remove the previous disagreements and come to unification of Vietnamese communist movements is "to remove all the old prejudices and conflicts and truly cooperate to unify Indochinese communist groups" [7]

The birth of the Communist Party of Viet Nam with the right strategy and tactics is an important turning point of Vietnam’s revolution, creating core factor to gather strength of national unity, combining national strength and power of era. This is the most important prerequisite for the further development, for the victory of the liberation struggle and for the revival of the nation.

Right from the beginning, Soviet Nghe Tinh High-tide united workers' and peasants' revolution to make core factor and foundation for the Great National Unity Bloc. In 1936 - 1939 movement, under the circumstance there are many important changes inside the country and in the world, the Party promptly changed strategic direction, mobilizing and organizing the masses. In this period, the national unity was extended and further reinforced. It was also the first time that Indochinese Communist Party took initiative to embark alliance with other patriotic and progressive organizations although from October 1930 to 1939, the great national unity bloc still paid much attention to the class and the Front didn’t work effectively.

With the return of leader Nguyen Ai Quoc, the of the 8th Central Conference of the Party from 10 to 19 May, 1941 completed the plan on changing the revolutionary strategy of the Party, opening the way to the victory of the patriotic struggle for national liberation of our people. The Conference confimed, "The Indochinese revolution in the current period is a national liberation revolution"; thus, "now, the interests of a part of the classes must be placed under life and death, survival of the nation, of the people"[8]. In "Letter to fellow-citizens" in 1941, he wrote, "Now, the interests of national liberation are the most important. We must unite to fight against the imperialists and unpatriotic Vietnamese to save the nation "[9].

The Eighth Central Conference of the Party and the birth of Viet Minh Front marked a turning point in the revolutionary leadership towards expanding and strengthening the national unity bloc, gathering and promoting national internal resources for a great revival. Hence, the national unity plan of the Party was set on the basis of Vietnamese patriotism. This policy is consistently implemented in Party's mass mobilization. Symbols such as "Dragon and Fairy", Hung Vuong, Hai Ba Trung, Tran Hung Dao and Hoang Hoa Tham, Lam Son, Bach Dang ... were honored to promote patriotism and sense of national unity. With the advent of the Viet Minh Front, it was the first time that a unified national front had become a reality and strongly promoted their roles. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Indochina, especially the direct leadership and careful direction of President Ho Chi Minh, Viet Minh Front not only expanded the great national unity bloc, constantly strengthened the motto "concurrence, joining forces, consensus, alliance" [10], but also functioned as a means of raising forces of the unity bloc by organizing that bloc into a strong organization. 1024x768 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}

Under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, through Viet Minh front, our nation not only joined together but also first gained the highest efficiency. Therefore, all decisions of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh [11] were advocated by the vast majority of Vietnamese people, including the forces outside Viet Minh Front. As a result, only about two weeks, our people joined altogether to carry out the August Revolution in 1945 and gained absolute victory across the country.

In the last 66 years, the August Revolution has been still a wonderful event in the history of Vietnam and humanity. There have been various explanations in the country and around the world about the miracle of our general uprising to seize power in August 1945. There is a consistent truth, undeniable history with the advent of Viet Minh Front; the national flag of our Party is upheld more than ever; and over the past 4 years, Viet Minh Front become a central factor gathering the power of patriotic forces and progressive individuals. The national unity bloc has been not only restored, strengthened, but also raised to a new height, combining with the power of the progressive forces in the world, creating strong revival motive to break out in time when the opportunity came. And there, the people of Vietnam, the peace-loving human even devoted stronger love, admiration, honor to great man Ho Chi Minh’s genius leadership and revolutionary preparation.

The August 1945 Revolution was the rebirth of a nation with great unity. The revolution is the symbol and the result of the great national unity bloc, is the convergence of the motives of the entire nation in the historical turning moments under the glorious flag of patriotism of Viet Minh Front led by our Party and President Ho Chi Minh. In the 66-year anniversary of the August Revolution victory, the entire Party, army, and people of Vietnam need to take much more effort to study, research, be imbued with solidarity and better follow President Ho Chi Minh’s guidelines on solidarity [12] in order to successfully carry out the renovation to achieve the goal “wealthy people, powerful country, equitable, democratic and civilized society” and socialism.
