CIRD contributes to Quang Binh socio-economic development

The Center for Indigenous Knowledge Research and Development (CIRD) has implemented various projects to transfer technological advances to people in mountainous area and ethnic groups.

Mr. Ngo Van Hong, CIRD Director emphasised this at a meeting with a delegation of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), led by Vice President Phan Tung Mau.

Mr. Hong said since its establishment in 2000, CIRD has conducted projects in poverty reduction and sustainable management of natural resources, he said, adding that the center has provide consultancy and financial resources to localities to handover the rights to use land to 10,000 households and individuals and 28,000 hectares of forest to communities across the country.

In Quang Binh alone, the centre has raised 10 million USD to build bridges, dams, irrigation canals and other infrastructure works. It has also organised hundreds of training courses and visits for farmers to exchange experiences in breeding, gardening, and natural resources preservation.

Thanks to CIRD’s support, many households have escaped poverty, many good models of breeding and gardening have been built, M. Hong said.

The centre leader expressed thanks to Quang Binh province and Tuyen Hoa district authorities, as well as VUSTA’s assistance in its operation.

However, he said, there remain challenges facing the centre, pointing out the long distance from Hanoi has prevented CIRD from accessing information about policies and donors.

In addition, as Vietnam is now a low mid-income country, aid from other countries and international organisations has seen a decrease.

Mr. Cao Xuan Tin. Vice Chairman of Tuyen Hoa district People’s Committee expressed thanks to CIRD’s support in the past years. He also reaffrimed that the district authorities will create better conditions for the centre to increase its operational efficiency.

Mr. Phan Tung Mau appreciated local authorities’ attention to CIRD’s operation and spoke highly of CIRD’s achievements in the past years.

He said VUSTA will assist CIRD to set up a Party Committee as early as possible.
