Primary and secondary pupils from 17 schools and Robotic centres nationwide took part in the second National Robothon Contest in Ho Chi Minh City on November 1.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training; the Ministry of Information and Communications; and Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Can Tho, and Vinh Phuc departments of Education and Training and Information and Communications.

The Contest, co-organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the DTT Eduspec J.V.C, and the Vietnam Association for Information Processing, is suitable for primary and lower-secondary pupils. It offers pupils a chance to apply their knowledge to invent different kinds of robots.

During the competition, entitled “Urban waste management”, contestants must complete five tasks. They include transporting the waste to a recycling plant, dumping waste transfer to bio-remediation, transforming trash into syngas, distributing power, and returning to starting point.

The contest was divided into three levels: elementary level for 6- to 9-year pupils, intermediate level for 9- to 12-year pupils and advanced level for 12- to 18-year pupils.

The best three teams will advance to the International Robotics Competition, scheduled for Malaysia at the end of this month.

Teacher Nguyen Quang Vinh, Head of Primary School Section of Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Education and Training, said: “It is not a simple extracurricular activity. Through the contest we want to uphold their creativity. Primary school students can apply the knowledge they learn at school regarding information technology and scientific advances. ”

Tran Hung Dao Primary School in Ho Chi Minh became the champion of the elementary level while Le Ngoc Han Primary School from Ho Chi Minh City and Nguyen Tat Thanh Lower-secondary School won the intermediate and advanced levels, respectively.

The organising committee also present five second prizes, seven third prizes and seven potential prizes.
