On April 20 at Le Thai To Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) in collaboration with the Center for Environment and Community Research and Hoan Kiem District People's Committee celebrated Earth Day 2019 with the theme "For a world without waste". The event attracted more than 2000 participants.

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Sc. Nghiem Vu Khai, VUSTA’s Vice President said "Plastic pollution has created many complex issues, directly affected to Vietnam's marine economy and threatened ocean ecosystems. Vietnam is one of five countries which have the biggest volume of plastic waste. The main cause is ineffective waste management".

In the next 10 years, it is predicted that volume of plastic waste discharging to the ocean will double. If we do not have any practical activities, there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by 2050. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 all over the world which aims to promote the active participation of individuals to protect the planet.

According to Dr. Sc Nghiem Vu Khai, to address this issue, there must be the participation of all levels, sectors, socio-political organizations, enterprises and each citizen. Vietnam has made strong international commitments to promote plastic waste reduction and recycling programs and it played an active role in forming a global cooperation mechanism for reducing plastic wastes at the expanded G7 Summit in Canada by the end of 2018. Vietnam also pledged to establish an ASEAN Center for plastic waste at the conference of World Economic Forum on ASEAN in Vietnam on last September.

With the theme "For a world without waste", today's 2019 Earth Day event will be an important first step of a series of activities aimed at building a culture of discharge waste for people, especially for tourists. Besides that promoting all parties to find out solutions to mitigate and recycle waste, especially plastic waste in order to serve building a circular economy for Vietnam.

At the meeting, there were many activities such as running a marathon around Hoan Kiem lake, exhibiting of initiatives and interactive activities of pupils and students on recycling waste to become school supplies or making environment painting.
