Founded in 1966, the Vietnam Historical Science Association has 59 member associations and branches (33 provincial associations, 4 professional associations and 22 branches of the national research and training centers of history), with more than 5,200 individual members. The Association gathers historians of the country, closely links with research and training institutions of history, implements scientific research through scientific seminars, historical forums to orient and promote the development of Vietnamese history.

Since its founding, the association has always paid special attention to the activities of social consultancy and evaluation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Cuong - President of Vietnam Historical Science Association said that in the field of social consultancy and evaluation, the current issues that the Association and its members are very interested in is the sovereignty of  the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Spratly and Parcel   Islands). Some scientists of the Association such as Professor Vu Duong Ninh, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc, historian Duong Trung Quoc, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Associate Prof. Dr. Do Bang and many other researchers have actively participated in studies and compilation of monographs by ministries and sectors such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Information and Communications, they also participated in talk about thematic issues, exhibitions of historical evidence for the legal status of Vietnamese sovereignty of  Hoang Sa, Truong Sa. The historian Duong Trung Quoc also positively speaks on the forum of  National  Assembly, and engages in popular diplomacy activities to combat China's misconceptions and wrongs about island sovereignty.

Assoc. Prof Cuong also added that after implementing the project on the formation and development of the southern land, the author team has sent to the relevant authorities a proposal including some important contents such as the establishment of a new understanding on the history of the South Vietnamese land, the history of this land began not only when the Vietnamese entered the area in the 17th century, but from the time when people came to this land. Since the 18th century, the Southern culture was incorporated into Vietnamese territory, forming part of Vietnamese history and culture. The proposal addresses the specificities of nature, history, structure and ethnic relations that which need to be taken into account when addressing current issues. It should also study deeply the Oc Eo culture, identify a typical relic to submit to UNESCO for recognition of World Cultural Heritage. There are some recommendations on economic, social and cultural development of the South.

One of the focus of social consultancy and evaluation activities that the Association particularly interested in the current period is the teaching and learning of history in schools. Over the past time, the Association held 3 scientific seminars on the position and importance of history in general education. On that basis, the Association will recommend that the Party and the State need to consider history as independent and compulsory subjects in the school program, not integrated with other subjects. In the immediate future, it is necessary to apply some temporary solutions to overcome weakness in history, initially provoke the spirit of loving history of students.

Explaining the difficulty in integrating history with other subjects, Assoc. Prof Cuong said that "history itself is not a single branch but has many different specialties such as economics, culture, geography... For example, teaching the Tran dynasty’s economics which is related to economic and cultural issues of the Nguyen dynasty, the teacher must have cultural knowledge. Teaching Bach Dang battle, the teacher must study the geology of the Bach Dang estuary, tide,…

In addition, some leading experts of the Association are invited to participate in the National Council of Cultural Heritage, participate in consulting the Party and State on issues related to conservation and promotion of national heritage values. Par example, the Association advised the Politburo and the Secretariat on the policy of building the National Monument of Hung King or history of the name Thanh Hoa, said Mr. Cuong.

Prof. Cuong shared, after a scientific information meeting introducing some new achievements in the study of Vietnamese history, besides domestic and international consensus, there were some dissenting opinions on the comprehensive approach. We have focused on this misconception through the thematic articles published in the Past and Now Magazine and the Historical Research Magazine in order to show scientific misunderstanding and cruel deeds, arbitrary deductions, even slander, and to clarify the truth to public opinion. So far 12 lectures have been published.
