Kovalevskaia 2014 honour Vietnamese female scientists

The Kovalevskaia Award 2014 will be granted to Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan from Thai Nguyen University and a group of 16 scientists led by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Binh for their excellent achievements in the field of applied science.

The awarded group, represented by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Binh, is from the Ha Noi Medical University and the Central Eye Hospital. They will be honoured for their research into a new treatment method that uses stem cell technology to fix injuries on the ocular surface of the eye.

Launched in 2004, the new treatment was successfully applied to a patient in March 2008 and and has so far cured 15 patients with a success rate ranging from 65 to 80 per cent.

The method is unprecedented in Viet Nam and is still under further research worldwide.

The cost for this treatment method in Viet Nam is estimated at VND10 million (US$480), just 10 per cent of the cost for the same treatment in Japan.

The individual award will go to Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan, former Deputy Dean of the Thai Nguyen Agro-forestry University, for her research into protective measures against animal diseases in the northern mountainous region. Assoc. Prof. Lan is a leading expert in the field of veterinary, who has various research projects and scientific articles posted in Vietnam’s professional magazines.

This year's Kovalevskaia Awards ceremony will be held in Ha Noi on March 7 on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

The Kovalevskaya awards are named after a famous female Russian mathematician in the 19th century with the aim of honouring and encouraging Vietnamese women in scientific research.

Fifty-nine outstanding female individuals and groups of scientists have been granted the award since its founding in 1985.
