Dr. Nguyen Ba Hai from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education has successfully invented an onstacle detector for visually-impaired people.

The 31-year-old researcher, who completed his doctoral program in the Republic of Korea, perfected his inventions after nine innovations.

His device, which won the humanitarian prize at the Tech Show Robocon 2012, can notify the wearer of an obstacle from a certain distance thanks to vibrations transmitted from a piece of equipment put in a bag to the glasses via wires.

The glasses can help blind people feel the distance of the object, he said, adding that the high-quality product is cheap enough for blind people to buy.

It looks like a pair of normal glasses and cost 2.5 million VND, he said.

Dr. Hai was selected outstanding citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2012. He is also founder of the “One-dollar course” on  computer programming and robot invention.
