Prof. Dam Thanh Son has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences – USA (NAS).

According to NAS’s April 29 announcement, Prof. Son was among 84 new members elected to the NSA in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. .

The academy also announced that it would elect 21 foreign associates from 15 countries.

The election of new members brought NAS’s membership to 2,214 and number of foreign associates to 444.

Son, born in Hanoi in 1969, received his dotoral degree at the Institute for Nuclear Research of Russian Academy of Sciences. He went to the US for his postdoctoral research in 1995-1996 and was invited to work as a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Chicago. He became a professor in Seatle in 2002 .

Ten years later, with outstanding achievements in thereotical physics, Son received the Simons Investigators Award from the New York-based Simons Foundation for his contributions to the field of theoretical physics.

He has been working as a professor for the University of Chicago in September 2012.
